Thanksgiving

This morning during reading, my students worked in small groups in reading a non-fiction Thanksgiving related article. Their groups then worked together to come up with a brief presentation to share with their classmates on what they have learned. Their creativity always amazes me-

Jeff Kinney

Today Lincoln Street School was fortunate to have Jeff Kinney visit. He is a game designer, cartoonist and author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Our students were all given their own autographed copy of the book thanks to some of our local business, Optima Bank & Trust, Water Street Bookstore and Convenient MD. Mr. Kinney presented how he started as a cartoonist, how his books are made and answered many questions. One of the highlights of his visit was being able to see his tour bus. Thank you to the local sponsors that made this event possible for our students!

We are bloggers!

Today was a very exciting day in 4-Estle.  We have officially turned into bloggers!  This afternoon, the students got their introduction to blogging.  This year I will be using a site called Kidblog.  Blogging allows students to publish their work for an authentic audience.  Furthermore, students can explore other Kidblogs and respond with comments or questions.

An important thing parents should know about our Kidblog site is that it is totally moderated by me.  No post or comment will show up on the site unless I have personally previewed and approved it.

An equally important thing for parents to know is that because of the moderation set up, our Kidblog site is visible to everyone. Our students will have a real worldwide audience, and I am sure that comments will be coming in from everywhere.

Lastly, the students are well aware of their responsibility and safety on the Internet.  I could tell from our discussion they know to never use the Internet without permission.  Moreover, the students understand they can only use first names in their posts.  Again, I will approve all posts and comments for appropriateness and user safety.   

The students are so excited to have their very own place to write and have it be read.

Kevin Skarupa

     Our fourth graders were fortunate to have a visit from Kevin Skarupa, WMUR Channel 9's morning meteorologist. He spoke about basic weather elements including the water cycle, types of clouds and extreme weather. He also shared a little about the technology he uses to predict the weather and how the maps appear on TV. Thank you Mr. Skarupa for visiting Lincoln Street School! STEM Challenge - Spiderweb

Today our class worked on their first STEM Challenge. These challenges encompass Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Their task today was to create a spiderweb with a group, using only dental floss and a black sheet of paper as a background. Once the challenge was completed they reflected on their work and wrote about their biggest obstacle, successes and questions they still have.
