Opening the Pringle Packages!

Today was a big day! This morning we skyped with Mrs. Pages 3rd grade class in Stratham, and finally found out if our Pringle packaging was successful!  The kids were able to watch the other class open their pacakges and waited with such anticipation to find out if it was still in one piece or not! I am happy to report that all 6 Pringles mailed from Exeter to Stratham made it in one piece. We are now busy writing about our experiences and reflecting on the project and continuing to blog, we are looking forward to our spring project with Mrs. Pages class!

Pringle Project - Packaging

The students have worked hard on their plans for mailing their Pringles. They were very creative in their packaging materials, Egg cartons, watch boxes, feathers, cotton balls and tissues are only some of the materials they used. We head to the post office this morning to send them off to Stratham!

Jeff Kinney

Today Lincoln Street School was fortunate to have Jeff Kinney visit. He is a game designer, cartoonist and author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Our students were all given their own autographed copy of the book thanks to some of our local business, Optima Bank & Trust, Water Street Bookstore and Convenient MD. Mr. Kinney presented how he started as a cartoonist, how his books are made and answered many questions. One of the highlights of his visit was being able to see his tour bus. Thank you to the local sponsors that made this event possible for our students!

We are bloggers!

Today was a very exciting day in 4-Estle.  We have officially turned into bloggers!  This afternoon, the students got their introduction to blogging.  This year I will be using a site called Kidblog.  Blogging allows students to publish their work for an authentic audience.  Furthermore, students can explore other Kidblogs and respond with comments or questions.

An important thing parents should know about our Kidblog site is that it is totally moderated by me.  No post or comment will show up on the site unless I have personally previewed and approved it.

An equally important thing for parents to know is that because of the moderation set up, our Kidblog site is visible to everyone. Our students will have a real worldwide audience, and I am sure that comments will be coming in from everywhere.

Lastly, the students are well aware of their responsibility and safety on the Internet.  I could tell from our discussion they know to never use the Internet without permission.  Moreover, the students understand they can only use first names in their posts.  Again, I will approve all posts and comments for appropriateness and user safety.   

The students are so excited to have their very own place to write and have it be read.

     Our fourth graders were fortunate to have a visit from Kevin Skarupa, WMUR Channel 9's morning meteorologist. He spoke about basic weather elements including the water cycle, types of clouds and extreme weather. STEM Challenge - Spiderweb

Today our class worked on their first STEM Challenge. These challenges encompass Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Their task today was to create a spiderweb with a group, using only dental floss and a black sheet of paper as a background. Once the challenge was completed they reflected on their work and wrote about their biggest obstacle, successes and questions they still have.

On Thursday 10/30 we will be traveling to Sandy Point in Stratham. Please be sure your student dresses in layers and proper footwear for walking around on dirt or muddy trails. Measuring the Wind

During our weather unit we study various types of weather instruments. Today we were fortunate to have a slight breeze to use our anemometers to measure the wind speed. We talked about the Beaufort Wind Scale and used the table to determine how fast in miles per hour the wind was traveling.

Cloud in a Jar

      Today in Science we made a cloud in a jar. We used weather and water vocabulary such as condenses, evaporates, etc. The students were excited to see the cloud come floating out of the container. We used our science observation journal to write about our procedure, make a hypothesis, make a conclusion and our reactions.

Welcome Parents and Fourth Graders,

     I want to be the first to officially welcome you to fourth grade! I am so excited to be your teacher this year and am looking forward to getting to know you. Fourth grade will be a busy year learning about New Hampshire History, regions of the United States, rocks and minerals, volcanoes, weather, electricity and magnets, and health.

     I hope you have enjoyed your summer vacation. I have been busy traveling, enjoying the outdoors, and reading! I'm excited to share with you all of the wonderful books I have read and am anxious to hear about yours. Please be ready to share something special that you have done and that you have read.

     With the school year quickly approaching I'm sure you are starting back to school shopping. Please see the recommended supply list below. Also during the first week of school you will receive a homework assignment book that you will be using this year. Please do NOT purchase one on your own.
